Welcome to the Sweet MIDI Player for iOS for iOS!

Sweet MIDI Player for iOS is a MIDI player for not only auditioning all types of MIDI files, but for modifying the MIDI files themselves. Use its mixer-like interface to easily edit the control messages, transpose the music, change the tempo, mute desired MIDI channels, and save the end results to disk.

View lyrics synchronized with the music (MIDI Karaoke files).

It also includes a playlist function which allows you to create and manage playlists.

Built in MIDI sound library with support for DLS/SF2 files.

Support for CoreMIDI (Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer II, iRig MIDI, Camera Kit etc).

Upload files using iTunes.

 

Introduction

Sweet MIDI Player for iOS consists of four views that you access by tapping the buttons at the bottom toolbar:

  1. Files
  2. Playlists
  3. Mixer
  4. Lyrics

The "Transport bar" at the top and is always available for easy control of the program.

 

Files
This view lists all files that you have uploaded to the device. Tap a file to start playback.

You import files to your device by using iTunes:
Connect your device to your computer using the included Dock Connector to USB cable.
Launch iTunes on your computer.
Select your device from the Devices section of iTunes.
Click the File Sharing.
Here you will find a list of apps currently installed on your device that support File Sharing. Select Sweet MIDI Player for iOS to view a list of the files currently uploaded.
Drag and drop files onto the Documents list to copy them to Sweet MIDI Player for iOS on your device or click the "Add" button, locate the file or files you want to copy from your computer, and click the "Choose" button. The selected files will be copied to Sweet MIDI Player for iOS on your device immediately.

Note: Don't rename files already uploaded to the device, that will destroy the playlists you already made for the files.

You can edit the "Sequence Name" by tapping the "Edit" button and selecting a file.

 

Playlists
You may create any number of playlists containing the files you have uploaded to the device.

To create a new playlist tap the "Edit" button, then tap the "New" button and give the playlist a name and tap "Done".
Now select the newly created playlist by tapping on it which will take you to another view. Tap the "Add" button and select the files you want to add from the displayed file selection view.
You may also edit a playlist with the ordinary iOS commands for deleting and moving files.

Tap a file to start playback.

 

Mixer
The Mixer view in Sweet MIDI Player for iOS is made up of two areas within the view. At the top is the Mixer and below is the Control Box with the transport controls and controls for changing the tempo and transposing (key change).

The Mixer contains 16 channels, one for each MIDI channel. Remember that the numbers 1-16 correspond to MIDI channels 1-16, not track numbers!
If the MIDI channel that you want to edit isn't currently visible, tap the "Slide" or channel number area at the bottom and swipe your finger left or right.

The Mixer allows you to change certain kinds of MIDI events. Volume message (control change 7), Pan message (control change 10), Reverb message (control change 91), Chorus message (control change 93) and Program Change message. All have their own controls in the Mixer.

The "Solo" button is used to solo a one or more MIDI channels.

The "Mute" button will mute one or more MIDI channels (not specific tracks).

All changes except "Solo" will be written to the MIDI file provided you have selected this option in the "Setting" view (see below).

BPM (Tempo)
For MIDI files containing one tempo event, you may set a new tempo expressed in BPM (Beats Per Minute). For MIDI files containing two or more tempo events you make a change of the tempo expressed as a percentage.

Time Signature
This is for display purpose only and may not be changed.

Transpose
Here you may transpose the song, up or down in semitones or half steps.
Note: The MIDI channels you use for drums must be disabled for transposition, see Settings/Drum Channels.

 

Lyrics
Many MIDI files also contains lyric and text events. To be able to view this text, click the "Lyrics" button at the bottom tool bar to activate the Karaoke display.

The display will display the text in different colors:
Red text indicates that the word/line has been sung.
Yellow text indicates that the word/line has yet not been sung.
White text indicates that the word/line will be displayed at the top of the next page.

 

Settings
Here you may change a number of settings that affects viewing and playback, most of them should be self-explanatory.

Sweet MIDI Player for iOS has a built in software synthesizer that uses the sounds from a DLS/SF2 file that is bundled within the software. DLS/SF2 is a family of standardized file formats for digital musical instrument sound banks (collections of virtual musical instrument programs). It's possible to upload other DLS/SF2 files using iTunes (see above) and this way improve the quality of instruments. Uploaded DLS/SF2 files can be selected here.

Some MIDI files have the volume turned the whole way up and may overload/distort the software synth. Lower the "Synth Volume" slider if you encounter this problem.

Here is also where you select if using the internal software synthesizer or if using Core MIDI.
